Corticalmap Authoring Tools enters beta version

SAN FRANCISCO (August 9, 2010) - Corticaldb, Inc. announced that Corticalmap is now in beta version and ready to be share with selected partners. The Corticalmap Authoring Tool is a specialized database editor allowing users to easily perform complex and powerful mapping operations onto spatial representations of complete nervous systems.

Corticalmap is used to create and update complete brain map databases - at multiple, overlapping levels of detail – from molecular processes and neuron arborization patterns to entire cell populations and structural hierarchies. Corticalmap will be released as a standalone program capable of editing both local self-contained databases and remote network databases shared over the Internet by communities of users.

“The goal of information management, which is distinct from simply acquiring data, is to understand the data and its relevance – to learn from the data. Emulating neurological behaviors with technology opens doors to greater use of computer and information technologies.” Said Marcos Guillen, CEO of Corticaldb, Inc.

Corticalmap brain maps easily scale to millions of individual neurons, mapped using a multiplicity of different simultaneous morphological, chemical, genetic and functional classifications systems. Corticalmap metadata model does not force any specific ontology system, allowing it instead to use multiple parallel views. Each view is specific to a system default or user defined ontology, including different biological taxonomies, conflicting structural brain hierarchies, and competing neuron classification models. Corticalmap parallel views interface hides most of this complexity from the user, using an intuitive graphical interface to solve complex set membership operations in the background, producing a coherent unified brain map, searchable using different converging classification paradigms.

Corticalmap started as an internal tool at Corticaldb, used by the company research teams to author sophisticated cortical circuits, compatible with CCortex simulations file formats. Besides its use as part of the CCortex simulation framework tool chain, potential applications for Corticalmap include broad applications for the worldwide scientific community. Corticalmap will enable researchers across different fields to easily perform complex and powerful searches for morphological, physiological, chemical, genetic and functional brain data, enabling them to share data and to compare results with their own results and experiments

Corticaldb, Inc Using New Intel Nehalem Xeon-based Server Solutions

SAN FRANCISCO (June 25, 2009) - Corticaldb, Inc announced it is updating its server base to the new Intel® Xeon® Processor 5500 series architecture, which is expected to use 40 percent less power and provide five times the computing density of previous systems. The 100 node system uses quad core Intel Nehalem Xeon dual processors with 64 gigabytes of RAM each.
The system will replace 500 commodity system servers which use 75 kilowatts hours of electricity; Corticaldb is committed to maintaining green and efficient processes as it continues to develop its products and core technology. The new solution system will provide for more computational power with a much lower energy footprint.

The system will be used to test large scale implementations of Corticaldb CCortex 3.0 . CCortex is a set of tools and software libraries, optimized to enable the deployment of sophisticated neural networks. CCortex effectively mimics the structure of the human cortex, the outer layer of the gray matter at the cerebral hemispheres, largely responsible for higher brain functions. CCortex technology is the centerpiece of all the CorticalDB products, powering the database engine of CorticalDB SQL and the ranking engine of CorticalDB search servers.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (February 09, 2007) - Artificial Development, a privately held company that that develops and supports CCortex ™, a cortical emulation system, has relocated, moving its headquarters from Palo Alto to San Francisco.

The move follow's AD's decision to shift its focus from being purely a Research & Development enterprise, to a technology solutions provider. The company's new headquarters will house its leadership team, company administration and sales and marketing departments, while much of the research and development teams will remain in India and Europe.

An AD spokesperson said that when the company was solely R&D-focused, its proximity to the rich academic community in Palo Alto was crucial to its development. As it expands, AD, with branches in Asia and Europe, hopes to leverage San Francisco's world class communications and infrastructure as it becomes focused on providing enterprise-level support and services.
